“The world is a tanpura. God’s tanpura. And each of us is one of its strings. Tell me, what is a string meant to do? Stay in tune and play. If a string keeps sounding out of tune, how can the world find peace? What will remain except unrest?”

About the author

Stories, songs and a life between them

Uday Rahman has been drawn to stories since childhood. Whenever he hears one, he wants to retell it in his own way. Among friends, he has long been known as a storyteller.

His love of books is just as old. As a child, he once stole Humayun Ahmed’s ‘Himu Rimande’ from a New Market bookshop. He was too young to read it and had no money to buy it. If he ever remembers the shop or its owner, he still hopes to repay the price, though he would prefer not to be remanded for this confession.

He began learning music at five, and now writes and composes his own songs. Several of his original works have already been released.

He lives in Germany with his wife and daughter and works as a software engineer and technology entrepreneur.

He is drawn to extraordinary events inside ordinary lives, and to the strange things that slip through the cracks of reality. An old family tale, a memory or a sudden question can become a story.

‘Sur O Anyanya Golpo’ is his first collection of short stories. He intends to keep writing.
